Smokin' Mary at Wood Ranch

Tasting the first sip of the Smokin’ Mary resonates with the smell when you pull up to Wood Ranch and get out of your car; barbeque and wood smoking! A deep rich smoky flavor prevails but is not overpowering and contrasts with the light sweetness and tang of BBQ sauce. The Wood Ranch Smokin’ Mary is salty and savory but the consistency remains thin. A little kick of heat nips at your senses but overall is pretty tame. Because the bloody mary isn't too heavy, it’s a great compliment to one of Wood Ranches BBQ dishes.

Have you ever attempted to attend eight brunches in one weekend!? Yeah, me either. That was until my friend Shelley, from The Drunken Tomato told me she was coming to town. I had heard about a new distillery in Hillcrest, called FruitCraft-Fermentery and Distillery that was doing some pretty cool things. So, I knew I had to add them to the bloody mary tour of San Diego I had set up for us!

Made from Scratch Yellow Bloody Marys at Cucina Urbana in Bankers Hill

Priscilla started out by muddling the recently delivered Japanese cherry tomatoes from Specialty Produce. Muddling helps release the fresh flavors of the tomatoes and mix with the alcohol exceptionally well. This process took me back to cooking in my own kitchen, making pasta sauce from scratch and blending the tomatoes. Tomatoes taste airy and fresher-than-fresh through this process.

Ocean Views and Bloody Marys at Duke's, La Jolla

To complement the Demitri's, Duke's La Jolla uses St. George's Green Chili Vodka. St. George's contains serranos and bell peppers, layered with notes lime and cilantro, a true California palette. St. George's brings the depth of this bloody mary flavor to the next level. The bloody is sweet and savory with a final pop of heat from the vodka, that leaves you wanting more. It is not difficult to drink the entire bloody in just a few minutes.

The Barn Yard Mary comes with multiple skewers of roasted seasonal veggies (zucchini, peppers, stuffed mushroom caps), tomato and mozzarella, pickled veggies (pepperoncini, olives, and onions) bacon wrapped shrimp, Mexican street corn (my favorite part), sage fennel sausage, and oh, a WHOLE ROASTED CHICKEN! Not just some dried out chicken, a juicy, moist, and succulent bird. It comes complete with a BBQ drizzle over everything!

Sexy Charcuterie in a Glass, The Tower23 Bloody Mary at JRDN

The Tower23 bloody mary had a stunning presentation; glistening in the sunbeams on the oceanfront patio, It was almost too pretty to drink! JRDN infuses their vodka with jalapeños and cilantro. I personally love cilantro, it gives meals and drinks such a refreshing and floral taste, in the best way possible. The mix is made in-house with a mild flavor but has that last second kick from the jalapeño infusion and spices. The jalapeños gave the bloody a perfect amount of heat, making it drinkable for lovers of all spice-levels.

Road Trip Bloody Marys at a Piece Brewery and Pizzeria

It was dreadfully hot and humid during our stay so after spending hours being tourists and walking for miles, we headed back to the Wicker Park area and decided to get some pizza and found Piece Pizzeria and Brewery. I got the menu and saw they had a bloody mary, and while all the house beers on tap sounded delicious, my inner tomato-loving self once again told me to go for it, and I wasn’t disappointed. It was cool and refreshing, just what I needed after all that walking.
