Italy…is not totally canceled. Since my husband and I’s trip to Italy and France this summer is canceled due to the current pandemic, I was craving a way to feel like I was in Italy, without being in Italy. Behold the Homemade Italian Inspired Bloody Mary Recipe!

The homemade Italian inspired bloody mary recipe is full of Italian spices and herbs, drizzled with some Italian exports, and garnished with a salad originating from the Isle of Capri. Yum!

What kind of tomato juice should I use?

For the homemade Italian inspired bloody mary mix, you can use tomato juice from the store like V8, but if you really want to get after it, you can use my homemade tomato juice recipe HERE. We are in quarantine, after all, so you might as well! #timeonmyhands

If you decide to use tomato juice from the store for this recipe, I recommend using vegetable juice rather than a tomato juice concentrate. Tomato juice is a little thicker and sweeter, so to avoid tasting like a tomato sauce use vegetable juice instead!

What should I garnish the Italian inspired bloody mary with?

As I mentioned, the garnish for this bloody mary recipe is a well-known salad that originated on the Isle of Capri in Italy…..the Caprese salad. Tomato, mozzarella, basil, fresh ground pepper, and kosher salt. It doesn’t get more Italian than that! Get my Caprese Salad Garnish Skewer recipe HERE.

*Update! This cocktail is also a great winter and holiday bloody mary to serve for guests or at holiday gatherings. You can typically find fresh/live oregano, parsley, horseradish, and garlic at your local grocery store during the fall and winter months.

Homemade Italian Inspired Bloody Mary

Prep time: 10 MinTotal time: 10 Min
The homemade Italian inspired bloody mary recipe is full of Italian spices and herbs, drizzled with some Italian exports, and garnished with a salad originating from the Isle of Capri. Yum!

Ingredients

  • 8 oz vegetable juice
  • 1.5 -2 oz Vodka or Gin
  • 2 teaspoons freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 1 Tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 Tablespoon of balsamic vinegar
  • 1 Tablespoon freshly grated horseradish
  • 1/2 teaspoon basil
  • 1/2 teaspoon oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon parsley
  • 1-2 teaspoon of red chili flakes
  • 1 teaspoon fresh ground pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

Instructions

  1. Fill a glass with ice and pour tomato juice over the ice
  2. Add all the dry and wet ingredients into a glass
  3. Add vodka to the glass. 1.5 -2 oz depending on your preferences
  4. Pour the mixture back and forth between the glass and cocktail shaker so ingredients are evenly mixed
  5. Garnish your bloody mary with the Caprese garnish

Notes:

Live herbs like oregano, parsley, horseradish, and garlic are abundant in the fall and winter months, take advantage. Add extra chili flakes for added heat. Goes great with vodka or gin. Leave out the Worcestershire sauce for a vegan bloody mary.
