If you’ve been keeping up on my blog, then you know I recently posted a Homemade Italian Inspired Bloody Mary Recipe, garnished with one of my favorite Italian dishes/salads, Caprese salad skewers! Originating from the Isle of Capri in Italy, this simple salad not only is fabulous on its own but makes for a tasty and elevated bloody mary garnish.

My trip to Italy and France this summer was canceled due to the current pandemic, so I wanted to transport myself from my backyard to Italy with just one bite. Imagining I was in Italy, is as close to being in Italy we’re going to get!

What is in a caprese salad?

The Caprese Salad Garnish Skewers consists of tomato, mozzarella, basil, fresh ground pepper, and kosher salt. It doesn’t get more Italian than that! I chose to leave out the balsamic vinegar for the garnish skewers simply for cosmetic reasons. For the sake of the photos I wanted to keep the mozzarella looking bright and white but you can totally drizzle some balsamic vinegar over your garnish skewers!

Should I add the balsamic vinegar to the caprese salad garnish skewers?

I would totally recommend drizzling the balsamic vinegar if you are planning to serve the Caprese Salad Garnish Skewers as an appetizer! Quick tip though: don’t drizzle the balsamic vinegar until you’re ready to serve the Caprese salad skewers so the mozzarella doesn’t look brown and old from setting into the cheese!

I’m never one to be big on measuring ingredients in my recipes or cooking so for this recipe, I just suggest getting all the ingredients together and building as many skewers as you need/want, and using your judgment on how much seasoning and vinegar to sprinkle. My cherry tomatoes were huge, so I cut them into halves.

What kind of mozzarella should I use?

For this recipe, I went with BelGioioso marinated mozzarella balls so there is already enough seasoned extra virgin olive oil on them, no need for extra. DelGioioso is of great quality and they have lots of different options! The balls made it easy to pop on the skewers and less of a mess with not having to cut the cheese! Just make sure you shake a little of the olive oil off so they aren’t over saturated!
