Texas, somewhere I had never been, despite my best friend living there for years, until she called and asked if I could help. Heidi lives in Texas with her husband, two puggles (Biscuit and Rolo), toddler (Evan) and then, had a new baby on the way. The family was preparing for her husbands deployment to the UAE for 8/9 months, selling their house, selling their townhouse and moving Heidi and Evan across the country back to Massachusetts. This way Hiedi could be around family while Jimmy was gone and baby Savannah was born. Military families sacrifice so much and we should be eternally grateful to them. I tried to do my best with helping and I hope I did enough. I walked the dogs, did painting around the house, cooked them meals at night, and helped pack. I think in stressful times, at least for myself, just having people who care and matter to me around, always helps!

The family ended up having a last-minute commitment in New Orleans, which overlapped with days I was already coming (on a non-refundable flight). So, for the first two days I hung out with Rolo and Biscuit by the pool and was gallivanting around Dallas-Fort Worth by myself. I’m no stranger to solo adventures, it was the perfect time to see sites and grab some good ole Texas bloody marys! I loved exploring both cities, snapping photos, and eating Texas food, despite it being hot and humid AF!!!

When heading to downtown Dallas on day 2, I sought out Smoke. It is revered as one of the best bloody marys in Dallas/Fort Worth, according to my research. The Double Barrel Bloody Mary did not disappoint. This is a bad-ass bloody mary with kick-ass flavor. Made with New Amsterdam Vodka, Tim’s roasted tomato and chile mix, and pickled relish, these bloodys pack some serious heat. Not the kind that burns your tongue, but the kind of heat that makes your insides do the Harlem Shake.

The flavors of the mix were an excellent complement to each other; the heat of the chile’s was then subdued by the sweetness of the roasted tomatoes and pickle relish. Of course, there was also a smokiness to the flavor and smell, but very subtle (the name is “smoke” afterall).  The rim was thoroughly seasoned and in addition to tasting great the presentation and skewer treats were top-notch. The skewer entailed a large grilled jalapeño, a pickled carrot, and a house-made pickle. This bloody had Texas written all over it!

If you are in the Dallas/Fort Worth area, love bloodys and looking for some authentic Texas cuisine, I highly recommend Smoke. As I mentioned earlier, at the time of my visit Jimmy was about to deploy. The great news is, he is home safe now and he got to see baby Savannah’s birth via face-time. I can’t begin to tell you how proud I am of Heidi for handling everything like such a boss and have the up-most respect for the strength she had during his deployment. Military families go through a lot and not everyone has the support of friends and families.
