In my line of business (eco-friendly house cleaning) it is imperative to have hearty breakfast in the morning. Especially, if you are like me and wake up already hungry and wondering what you’ll eat next. On the days that doesn’t happen after about hour two, I not only get hangry but I get dizzy, sweaty and shaky. Sounds marvelous, doesn’t it? One morning, in particular, I had no groceries at home so I had to make a pre-work stop nearby my clients' house.

I wondered into Maggie’s Cafe, a Mexican restaurant, and a bar in Serra Mesa. As I walked in, I noticed a chalkboard sign that read, “$5.00 dollar bloody marys” and I almost tripped over myself! Five dollar bloody marys are like unicorns in San Diego; non-existent. I thought to myself, maybe I could have one now with breakfast but quickly used my better judgment and ordered a giant omelet instead.

While cleaning, you have a lot of time to think to yourself and I could not stop thinking about that dang bloody mary! I decided that after work, I was going to go get that $5.00 bloody.

When I arrived at Maggie’s Cafe I opted for a seat at the bar. Still full from the giant omelet I had just 3 hours prior, who needed a table? That’s for like, people who want to, like, order food and stuff. In my case, not necessary. It was a liquid lunch for this hard-working, bathroom scrubbing, oven cleaning, floor mopping badass.

To my surprise, for only being $5.00, the bloody mary from Maggie’s Cafe was delightful! The bloody was deep red in color and I could see the spices floating around in my glass. There was the perfect amount of heat and acidity. The bloody mary was salty, savory and the rim was coated with Tajin (my first ever encounter with Tajin). I had to slow down drinking the bloody because Maggie’s gives more than a generous pour of Han Vodka; a thick, smooth, and sweet Korean Vodka. As far as the mix goes, well I was told it was a “secret”. Yup, that’s right, I don’t know what was in the bloody but it was delicious and well worth $5.00!

Maggie’s Cafe may be a bit off the beaten path but well worth it. Great food and cheap bloodys and drinks altogether ($2.00 mimosas)!
