Post-Work Buzz with Maggie's Cafe $5.00 Bloody Marys

I wondered into Maggie’s Cafe, a Mexican restaurant, and a bar in Serra Mesa. As I walked in, I noticed a chalkboard sign that read, “$5.00 dollar bloody marys” and I almost tripped over myself! Five dollar bloody marys are like unicorns in San Diego; non-existent. I thought to myself, maybe I could have one now with breakfast but quickly used my better judgment and ordered a giant omelet instead.

Made from Scratch Yellow Bloody Marys at Cucina Urbana in Bankers Hill

Priscilla started out by muddling the recently delivered Japanese cherry tomatoes from Specialty Produce. Muddling helps release the fresh flavors of the tomatoes and mix with the alcohol exceptionally well. This process took me back to cooking in my own kitchen, making pasta sauce from scratch and blending the tomatoes. Tomatoes taste airy and fresher-than-fresh through this process.

Garden Delight Bloody Marie at Et Voila! French Bistro

The Bloody Marie from Et Voila is one of my favorite bloody marys I’ve had in San Diego. The taste and the presentation were sophisticated and whimsical, which I would expect nothing less from a true French Bistro. Immediately, my sense of smell was heightened by the fresh thyme and basil leaves that were a part of the garnish. The garden garnish continued with an olive, celery, mushroom, pickled onion and carrot.

The Roxy Encinitas “Everything but the Kitchen Sink" bloody mary is 24 ounces served in a large mason jar of a made from scratch mix topped with an abundance of delicious food. The Roxy is a completely from scratch kitchen, so nothing comes from a jar, bottle or a can. This, in my opinion, is an essential staple in the best bloody marys. When my bloody mary arrived, everyone stopped and stared as we marveled at the size and spectacle of the bloody.
