Saturday night; not the typical time I go for bloody marys. Tequila; not the typical liquor I drink in my bloody marys. Meeting someone who I met on Instagram in person; not the typical way I meet people. However, when in Rome, (and by that I mean a coastal Mexican restaurant in Pacific Beach serving bloody Maria’s for $6, with an invite from San Diego Food Girl) one lives on the edge!

I was a bloody maria virgin so when I saw it on the menu, I felt compelled to step out of my comfort zone and go for it. I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed the bloody maria! Not being tolerant of tequila, I definitely felt a solid buzz and rosy cheeks.

The bloody maria did taste very much like tequila but the tomato juice and other ingredients muddled the intense aftertaste of the tequila. The bloody was salty and citrusy, thanks to the fresh lime juice. Drinking it from sip to swallow was like doing a tequila shot with the salt and lime but goes does much smoother.

At the first taste, I thought the bloody maria had celery juice but then learned it was actually watercress. The watercress elevates the freshness and zest. I would assume they use younger watercress, as mature watercress typically has a much spicier and strong flavor. Despite tasting smoky and peppery from the charred jalapeños in the mix, the heat is just above mild.

The tequila in the Pueblo Bloody Maria is house infused with red jalapeños (mature jalapeños) giving it a slight sweetness while adding to the peppery taste. The rim is covered in Tajin (my favorite rim) and garnished with lime, olive, cucumber, and orange pepper. A perfect healthy snack to wash down the fresh bloody with!

If you haven’t been to Pueblo in Pacific Beach, I highly recommend it. They have nightly specials, great chefs, bartenders and management. Not to mention their awesome rooftop. I’m so glad that Saturday evening I decided to live on the edge, I even stayed out until 9:00 p.m.!
